Electrochemical "Fischer-Tropsch" synthesis for CO2 reduction to liquid fuels and chemicals

Prof.dr. E.J.M. Hensen, Eindhoven University of Technology

Projectnumber P17-08 project 3

This project investigates the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and CO to liquid products (hydrocarbons, oxygenates) in water at elevated temperature and pressure in order to open up chemistry similar to thermochemical Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The final goal is to achieve high current densities (> 100 mA/cm2), a tuneable hydrocarbon product distribution, and stable operation (> 100 h). The technology will be brought to a higher TRL by evaluating the process in a mass-transfer-intensified spinning disc electrolyzer.

Main deliverables and timing

D3.1. Selection of the most promising electrode materials (M18)

D3.2. Selection of optimum operating windows for at least one catalyst system for CO electrolysis and one for COelectrolysis (M36)

D3.3. Validation of COx electrolysis in a spinning disc electrolyser (D3.3a) and a cost estimate of the products (D3.3b) (M60)
